Available centrifuges

The generic term "centrifuge" covers a wide range of different centrifuge types that are all designed for the separation of solids from a suspension or for the separation of two liquids of different densities in the centrifugal field. The combination of a separation of solids from a suspension with the simultaneous separation of two liquids of different densities is also possible.

Common to all the various centrifuge types is that they all have a bowl that rotates at high speed.

Depending on the type of the bowl there may be made a distinction into sedimentation centrifuges and filtration centrifuges.

The following overview about the available centrifuge types starts with the sedimentation centrifuges.

Separators

Separators belong to the sedimentation centrifuges.
A distinction is made according to the form of the bowl wall or according to the different built in parts as follows:

  • Chamber type separators

Chamber-type separators, comprise a cylindrical bowl in which several nested concentric cylinders are installed in order to increase their equivalent separation surface area.
The task of chamber bowl separators is the clarification (solid / liquid separation).
Chamber bowl separators have to be shut down for cleaning (manual removing of the solids).

  • Disc type separators

Disc type separators contain a large number of conical disks in order to increase their equivalent separation surface area. Disc type separators contain a large number of conical disks in order to increase their equivalent separation surface area.

There are several tasks for disk type separators, for example:

  • Clarification: Separation of solids from liquids
  • 2-phase Separation: Separation of two liquids of different densities
  • 3-phase Separation: Separation of two liquids of different densities including simultaneously separation of solids


Disc type separators exists in different implementations regarding the mechanism for solids discharge:

Decanters

Decanters belong to the sedimentation centrifuges, too.
Horizontal decanter centrifuges are characterised by a rotating cylindro-conical solid wall bowl in which a screw runs at a slightly different speed to the rotational speed of the bowl.

This design causes the solids contained in a suspension to be slung outwards in the centrifugal field against the bowl wall where they are picked up by the screw, transported towards the solids outlet point and continuously discharged.

Decanter Centrifuges are used for continuously separation of solids from liquids of lighter density.

Moreover they can be used for continuously separation of 3-phase systems consisting of two liquids of different densities and solids.

There are different types of decanter available, that can be roughly classified as follows:

  • Two-phase decanters

for solid / liquid separation
For example for the clarification of liquids, thickening and dewatering of sludge, classification of fine pigments etc.

  • Three-phase decanters (Tricanters)

for solid / liquid / liquid separation (two liquids of different density and solids).
For example for the recovery of animal fats and vegetable oils, oil sludges etc.

  • Sedicanters

for solid / liquid separation of pasty or slimy sediments from the liquid.

Other centrifuges

Beside separators and decanters there are existing other kind of centrifuges, too.
Below there is given a short overview of other available centrifuges.

  • Peeler centrifuges

Peeler centrifuges belong to the discontinuously operating filtration centrifuges.
With this centrifuge type, the solids retained in the bowl are peeled out periodically by a pivotal peeler knife.

  • Pusher centrifuges

Pusher centrifuges belong to the continuously operating filtration centrifuges.
With this centrifuge type, the solids retained in the bowl are continuously discharged by an oscillating moving bottom.

  • Worm/screen centrifuges (Conturbex)

The worm/screen centrifuges belong to the continuously operating filtration centrifuges.
With this centrifuge type, the solids retained in the bowl are continuously discharged by a screw in the cylinder rotating at a different speed to the speed of the bowl.

  • Inverting filter centrifuges

Inverting filter centrifuges belong to the discontinuously operating filtration centrifuges.
With this centrifuge type, the solids retained in the bowl are gently discharged periodically by the inversion of the filter cloth.

  • Three-column centrifuges (pendulum centrifuges)

Three-column centrifuges belong to the discontinuously operating filtration centrifuges.
The solids retained in the bowl here have to be discharged manually or by lifting out a filter bag.

  • Tubular centrifuges

Tubular centrifuges belong to the discontinuously operating sedimentation centrifuges.
These centrifuges have a cylindrical bowl with a generally relatively small diameter rotating at a correspondingly high speed. The precipitated solids have to be removed manually
